RS Wood <rsw@therandymon.com> writes: > Which interface would you recommend or do you enjoy on a daily basis, > and why? I like KDE4 on my three year old Thinkpad X201. It has enough options and builtin stuff to realize a UI I want without figuring out what file it is this year where I have to edit to get the usual stuff right. Like turn Caps lock into control or have double click on the titlebar max out the window in vertical... I like some light eye candy too like transparency and wobbly windows. Also the stuff I want on a laptop mostly works in KDE. Those things like managing the radios and whichever is used when to do whatever, power management based on power state and battery status. Then there's using the various extra keys for volume and screen brightness and whatever. I remember back in 2008 I picked Gnome 2 over KDE 4 as KDE always registered two presses of the mute button... There were other problems too with KDE4 back then. On my desktop the interface is the Awesome window manager. Funny how things change when you have a desktop: no radios at all so no need for NetworkManager and modemmanager. And if I need to adjust volume, that's why the amp has a volume knob... And power has only three states, off, s2r and on. Also since Awesome is a tiling window manager where a mouse is by no means required, I once had taken the mouse somewhere else and worked happily without a mouse for a couple of hours without even realizing it wasn't there... The IFs for my OpenWRT router are CLI and web browser (via LuCi) although it's beefy enough I probably could run GUI apps on it. Oh, I tried Gnome3 at some point. Tweaked it a lot which involved things from editing XML files to installing addons to have basic funtionality. It was OK for a while but then there was an update to Gnome3 which wiped all that so I wiped Gnome... I think I tried Razor-qt at that point before settling on KDE4. Razor was very cool but hardly what I consider usable on a laptop.
