Contrary to Windows or Apple, Linux GUI is not unique nor tied to the system. You can have a Linux machine with a totally different graphic GUI, using a totally different toolset and API, and with applications that only run on that GUI. This is, arguably, what Android did. Thus it is possible to design a Linux "desktop" to run on tablets using touch screen: there would be a full Linux beneath, but applications would only run on that desktop with a different API. You can think of it as a graphic system on top of a text system. It is not what Windows did (version 3), because Windows rewrote may basic functions of the MsDOS OS that was running below it, as it was not capable (things like memory limitations; having to rewrite basic functionality to access the disk and files while accessing the entire memory and not having to change CPU mode. Later and necessarily M$ dropped that model. -- Cheers, Carlos.
