Surely there are magnetic variations at finer grain. Rocks, hills,
trees, all sorts of stuff will make a complex magnetic landscape that
can be mapped, and that a low-flying plane could use in combination
with many other things to navigate.

Birds and fish seem to do it. I guess they are too uneducated to
