Non sequitur. Sure you can "navigate" by by observing a coast line, but only in the sense of not running into the coast line. How do you know which coast line it is and where you are on that coast line absent geographic data of some sort, i.e. a map? If you set sail in Hawaii headed for the port of Long Beach with only sonar or radar you have no clue which way to steer and could arrive at a coast line anywhere from Canada to Nicaraua. If you set sail with a compass and maintain a heading of about 52 degrees, you will likely arrive at a coast line somewhere between northern Baja California Mexico and Oregon. -- penninojim@yahoo.com
