When someone starts arguing with "you are insulting me", you know that he doesn't have any *actual* argument. Especially when it comes to such a complete non-insult as "thick skull" (which just means "stubborn"). When this happens, the discussion has reached a point where one person is really, really grasping for straws, to have something, anything at all, to attack the other person with. The actual discussion is over and the childish namecalling has begun.
