As mentioned, I have learned the hate the over-use of 'auto' through the process of having to read tends of thousands of lines of code written by other people. Quite often even in situations where in theory "the type doesn't matter", it makes reading the code more difficult precisely because you don't know what type it is and why it "doesn't matter". It makes the code harder to understand because you don't know what it's dealing with. Sometimes that's ok (such as in templated code). Sometimes it isn't.
