Gas Buddy will tell you where the cheapest gas stations are -- the main
reason I have a FreedomPop chip in my old phone :-)

Heh. Some of us just love paper maps even if we need a magnifying glass
to use them. We did a lot of car traveling when the kids were little.
Their instructions were to get one of every map the gas stations had
when we stopped. We still have them. The kids too.
The TripTiks were useless -- we slept in the van/motorhome and bought
our food at grocery stores.
I especially like AAA's 'Indian Country' map -- it was just lovely using
it to plan and execute our driving trip around Utah. If you haven't
done that, do it soon.
Google maps etc. are definitely useful, but certainly not beloved.

My Garmin GPS (car unit, obviously) has lifetime 'traffic' via the
antenna/power cord. It's really good at telling me about heavy traffic
several seconds after I'm stuck in it. It also routed me off the
freeway and left me in the middle of a strange town with no further
instructions. We may need it, but (like the middle east) technology is
NOT our friend.
Except for the beginning of The Plague last spring I just assume that
there will always be traffic wherever I'm going (SoCal) -- then I can
get a pleasant surprise when I'm wrong.
