What’s most striking about the initial attack sequence today is the
immediacy and ferocity of the effort to repel the invading horde. The
president’s security detail swarms the lawn with pistols drawn and
immediately starts to bullseye their foes. The National Guard are instantly
summoned, and roll down the street in armoured vehicles. Helicopter
gunships are scrambled. A missile launcher pops out of the White House roof
and shoots down a North Korean gunship, which on its way down grazes the
Washington Monument which then collapses in a column of dust (giving the
film its dubious 9/11 homage moment).

The speed of their response is even remarked on by McDermott, who sneers:
“It takes 15 minutes for your armed forces to reach the White House. We
took it down in 13.” Meanwhile in the situation room, a burly general tells
the assembled officials that the country is “at Defcon 4” – the
second-worst of all the Defcons.

Meanwhile in the real world, the response barely seemed to reach Defcon
zero point five. Cameras showed a handful of police officers in uniform
(not body armour), standing aside helplessly while the crowd forced their
way into the national seat of government, in broad daylight, with what
looked like minimal effort. The National Guard didn’t take 15 minutes to
arrive but over four hours, during which news channels had been
broadcasting live from what looked like an essentially undefended building.
As for Butler-esque avenging angels, stalking from room to room and
stabbing intruders in the neck without a second thought, there were
apparently none to be found.

The events were shocking in and of themselves, but part of the shock came
from just how easy it had all looked: disaster-movie results on a
threadbare indie budget. Whatever the reason for the US’s woefully
inadequate response, it’s hard to see how any number of
Stars-and-Stripes-waving blockbusters could hope to overwrite these images
in the popular memory. I suppose we’ll have to start taking Gerard Butler
films with a pinch of salt.
