What’s the special appeal of watching the invasion and/or destruction of
Washington DC on screen? Carnage on Capitol Hill has been a staple of
Hollywood films for decades, as alien forces, foreign invaders and
treacherous double agents have all taken turns to besiege, infiltrate and
explode various US government landmarks. Roland Emmerich surely set the
standard in 1996’s Independence Day, in which the White House explodes
almost ecstatically as it’s blasted from above by a flying saucer’s laser
cannon.

But there have been other memorable assaults over the years in films as
varied (and varyingly serious) as Superman II, Earth vs the Flying Saucers,
Mars Attacks!, GI Joe Retaliation, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and
Emmerich’s own later disaster epic, 2012, in which he crushed the
presidential residence with an aircraft carrier, swept inland by a tidal
wave.

For international viewers, the spectacle often comes with a guilty tang of
schadenfreude: we get to see a swaggeringly impregnable world-power
humbled, even if just for an hour or so, until Will Smith, Channing Tatum
or another hunky military everyman can set things right. But these are
American-made films – and it’s not like British filmmakers are intent on
constantly blowing up London, or French ones Paris. (Whenever European
capitals are flattened, it’s invariably by Hollywood too, and often as an
afterthought.) So why do audiences in the United States apparently want to
see it happening to them, over and over again?
