I have updated the wiki to make this clearer. gcc's platform names are sometimes a bit old-fashioned; for exaple, you will still find POWER named "powerpc", and its machine-dependent files are under the config/rs6000 directory. If you want confirmation of that gfortran works on zSystem, look at https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/gcc-testresults/2020-September/590255.html which shows recent testresults of gcc master for a z13. The TREE structures that gfortran passes to the gcc middle end are quite platform-agnostic, with certain assumptions which are fulfilled for all modern machines (such as existence of a 32-bit and a 64-bit integer type and two's complement). There is the occasional platform dependent bug, but that is usually because of endianness issues (typically caught within a day or two by the people running regular regression tests on big-endian POWER8, and quickly resolved), or because some non-Linux or non-x86 system exposes issues where the code generated by gfortran is wrong, but the usual development platforms didn't catch it. (To be honest, there are a couple of bug reports for architectcures that are now quite rare, like HP-PA or SPARC, which no gfortran developer uses. These sometimes take a very long time to resolve.) The only place I can think of where gfortran produces explicit platform-dependent code is the library code for matrix multiplication on x86. There are several versions which use the base instruction set, AVX128 or AVX256. The code is compiled from the same source code with different flags, and the version selected at run-time.
