Not really. The 704 had one accumulator and three half-length index registers so there wasn't a lot of register allocation to be done. Fortran H for S/360 generated excellent code for the 1960s but its register allocation was ad-hoc, trying to keep addresses and intermediate values in registers during a routine so they wouldn't have to be reloaded or recomputed.
