Our RPG guru wrote a program that cheated on the operating cycle; it read a single parameter card and ground out an entire mortgage amortization schedule. I sure did. :-) And when we finally did get disks, we only had two drives. We started out with a pair of 8411s, which were perfect clones of IBM 2311 drives. We soon upgraded to 8414s, which looked the same but were clones of 2314 spindles. To handle these drives, which were beyond the performance of any integrated I/O controller, Univac added a selector channel which used IBM-style CCW chains - so I got into some fun programming there too. For instance, I got my hands on a 9400 program that would clone a pack in 11 minutes. I converted it and optimized it to do the job in 8 minutes - not bad considering the stock Univac utility took an hour.
