The phrase "High Priests" carries the implication that we claim
authority based upon divine endorsement. As someone who doesn't even
believe in Divinities, I find the suggestion that I'm making such a
claim quite disgusting. What I say is true, if it is true, only because
(and therefore, only insofar as) it accurately reflects what the
standard says. And the standard doesn't have authority because it is a
infallible Holy Book containing the word of God. It is a somewhat
fallible document that has authority only because fallible human beings
created ISO and gave ISO the authority to create international
standards, and ISO in turn gave the fallible committee the authority to
produce an international C standard.
