The behavior is undefined. I cited the wording from the standard that
says so. If you disagree, please explain why.
Again, the standard says that "the argument shall be a pointer to
the initial element of an array of character type". (void*)0 is
not a pointer to the initial element of an array of character type.
The fact that the standard doesn't have extra wording stating
an exception when the pointer needn't be dereferenced means that
that corner case *is* covered. Violation of a "shall" outside a
constraint implies undefined behavior (section 4 paragraph 2).
I presume you agree that calling abort() for a program with undefined
behavior is conforming. If not, please explain why.
