Yeah, that is problematic.

And in that case, it is overzealous use of whitespace.  For the 
buttons/checkboxes/etc., yes they need some amount of whitespace in 
order to allow for the "fat finger" vs. the "pointy mouse".

But the text itself (assuming there is any text in the first place), 
that is merely scrolled by swiping anywhere upon it, it does not need 
huge whitespace around it.  Yet, sadly, it also gets the "lots of 
whitespace" treatment.
