it does. I don't know how steep it scales up (O(n) vs 
O(n^sth) or O(log(n))), but it slows as the internally held 
cache or hash table with indexes grows as the names / links 
becomes more numerous.

I clearly suffer from this in two main contexts : 1) 
searching disk-wide. 2) scanning to get properties (like 
size and item numbers) on top-level objects.

how could be different ? A static binary tree would be 
Log_2(n) in search (in the best scenario), but when the tree 
have to be created on the fly, extra time is needed anyway.
