In the fullness of time, indeed, > everything is a file. It's much deeper than that. the read() and write() system calls work on pipes, tcp sockets, character devices (tty, pty, serial port, printer port) block devices (tape, disk, MMC), system memory (via /dev/mem), and regular files on mounted filesystems. Every _thing_ is a file. On windows It's not like that, the comsole, and serial ports, are files; but tcp sockets aren't so different calls are needed to handle them, select works on sockets but something different is needed for serial ports etc... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everything_is_a_file mtools (for reading FAT devices) wirked by opening the device (or a image file) like a file and modifying its content in the normal way. the main advantage of mtools was that you didn't need to mount disk to access the content or remember to unmount it, linux has has FAT mount/read/write capability since "forever" (it was there in kernal 0.95) -- Notsodium is mined on the banks of denial.
