Calling them "nonsense" because they don't physically exist is like
calling iso elevation curves on a topo map "nonsense" because if you go
out in the field, no hills have iso elevation curves or slope gradients on
them! It is an instructive tool, and is pretty much what John S. has been
asking for since he is (too!) visually oriented.
