The introducer went on and on about how terrifying it was, how he had lain awake night after night thinking about it and shivering, till finally it dawned on him -- he said -- that he was *not* alone, that hundreds of other people had been just as terrified by it as he had been. Well ... with an introduction like that, almost anything is going to fall flat. And I had been reading science fiction since I was a young child. I was not impressed. Benjamin Britten made an opera out of it, which is ... well, I judge it better than the book, though it's not the best opera I ever heard.
