I asked for reservation of \u for up to $FFFF Unicode codepoints at the 
time S\" was being proposed, and I can't remember why it was turned 
down. It's supported in standard C, JavaScript, C# and probably a number 
of other languages.

\U is often reserved for $10000 and above and doesn't match the \u case, 
at least in C, so a case insensitive parse could be a future potential 
issue too.

I have implemented \uxxxx in my escaped strings. I find it useful, as I 
live in the UK but use a US keyboard. $ is readily typed, but I have no 
key for the £ symbol \u00a3. And, perhaps less importantly since Brexit, 
the Euro € \u20ac.
