I was never a huge KDE fan. I always found it was somewhat cluttered
and unintuitive to use, and it's System Settings panel was very
similar to trying to divine advent's maze of twisty passages, all of
them alike.

I ran Cinnamon for awhile on the laptop, but it lags very hard if you
don't have an NVIDIA or ATi card due to all the eyecandy, and it
didn't like running with acceleration with the Intel on-board
graphics. Even when I eventually fixed that, I found it was wonky at
best, notifications would show up floating in the wrong part of the
screen, and I'd get noticeable UI lag in places.

As for LXDE, I ran that for a long time after Xfce jumped off the
insanity cliff, but I find it handles multimonitor really poorly.
Popping up a context menu had a bad habbit of showing up on the edge
of the wrong monitor; the task bar would strench across both monitors
to matter what I did, and it seems to have a weird behavior with
startup hooks which drove me mad that it would launch some
applications at startup like TeamViewer despite having cleared them
out of the startup groups.

I haven't used Enlightment since the E16 days so I can't really speak
on it. WindowMaker was my de-facto goto for awhile, but I couldn't get
the dock panel to work properly, or have it work at all sanely with
non-GNUstep apps. It also looked fairly ugly with GTk applications. At
least Motif tends to fit in with Thunderbird and Firefox. I might give
it a go when I nuke my desktop back to the stone age as I suspect it's
simply Ubuntu/Debian's version of WM is screwy. I'm hoping for
something less screwy under Gentoo, though I'm semi-debating just
hopping on the FreeBSD train.
