For me, the speed of file access always been a consideration when 
writing tools. The earliest ones tended to be memory-based because the 
speed of floppy-disk access (and before that, tape) was too slow for how 
I liked to work.

So instead of starting with source code in a file, starting a compiler 
from disk, processing that (I understand there was a lot of file 
activity in early 8-bit compilers), writing the result to disk, linking 
it (more reading and writing) then reading again to run it...

... you just ran a resident program (like an early IDE); the source was 
in memory, the compiler was part of the program, so it compiled memory 
to memory and the result could be run immediately. But you had to save 
every so often in case the program went haywire and wrote all over it 
(unless this code ran on some attached hardware, or I used memory 
protection - a switch on /WR).

Compile times for my test programs were negligible. This was on a 4MHz 
Z80 with floppies.

It seems other tools like to do things differently, with a huge 
dependency on files and putting the onus on getting it efficient onto 
the OS. (Some exceptions of course, I think Turbo C was quite snappy but 
I never used C until years later.)

Yes, MS can add a magnitude or more to these figures. (VS was some 1.5M 
files I think.) But I'm not usually expected to get involved in building 
them.

I think both MS and Unix people have forgotten how to keep things small.
