So your only evidence that it is "supposed to make like easier" is that
you are not alone in using it that way? I agree that you are not alone,
but I don't think you can conclude from that that it is supposed to help
you in your task. You would be better off accepting that there will be
problems, because C is *not* supposed to be used as you are using it.

I think you would get a deeper understanding if you dropped the idea
that any design is simply a "bad idea". The need for a length modifier
cropped up only when a type got introduced that was too wide to promote
to int. What would you have done at that point in C's development?

I didn't realise it was a rhetorical question. I would not have
answered it had I know.

So your question was really what should a program use to print a 64-bit
int on a broken C implementation that does not have support for printing
64-bit ints? That's a harder question. Do you know the full range of
broken C implementations that you want to be able to target?
