That isn't what you said before. You said most people can recognise 
about seven objects without counting them. If the question is merely one 
of identifying number, then let's see how many people can identify the 
number of asterisks listed here, without counting them:

That's actually true.

There is a vast difference between counting limpets on a rock and 
writing C programs. Surely you can see this? Anyway, it's not that hard 
to get a decent estimate: grid the rock, count the limpets in a few 
representative-looking cells, calculate a mean, and multiply up. But if 
you need absolute precision, move them to another rock, and tally as you 
go. (If you are required to leave the rock with the same number of 
limpets as before, move them to a container instead, and then put them 
back when you're done.) And this has nothing whatsoever to do with 
programmers' ability to comprehend multiple nesting levels.
