Ok but isn't the need for hexadecimal float notation still the exception
rather than the rule?  It's pointless if not wasteful to send data at 'full
precision' when the data itself either doesn't have that precision or will
never be employed at that precision.  e.g. engineering applications
typically only require a few digits of precision.
