This is not historically validated. Einstein maintained himself that he 
was unaware of the MMX at the time he wrote the paper.

Yes, I misstated. Where I said "Maxwell", I meant "Lorentz". Thanks for 
catching the error.

I would dispute that claim. Einstein did not start from a premise of no 
ether. What he started from was the principle of relativity as applied 
to electrodynamics. What he arrived at was an explanation of a great 
number of observed things that nowhere relied on an ether, and so as 
fare as he was concerned it was a spurious notion.
