I happen to be Slackware user. If I die without ever seeing Ubuntu, Mint or similar, I am not going to think that I missed something in my life. It means that I have no first hand experience. However, from what I've heard, you should no expect significant improvement from switching to KDE, or changing distro to Ubuntu. KDE might have some high quality apps, and, perhaps, offers more continuity across versions. However, you can run KDE apps from Cinnamon, as well. No need to switch to KDE to run KDE apps. You seem like a person who is not ready to dive deeper into Linux internals at this point, although you might change the attitude later, many do. I'd say that Mint/Cinnamon is as good as any for you.
