I understand that Apple thinks they were there first and anything that 
came later was wrong-if-different; it's an understandable viewpoint, if 
you ignore the fact that everybody wants their stuff to be better than 
the next guy so they make it different on purpose.  And it is possible 
to delete text with only a backspace function, though not all iOS input 
fields support the magnified cursor or even let you poke the field to 
move the cursor from the end of the field, thus making it necessary to 
retype the whole whatever if you discover a typo in the first part.  The 
spotty support shows the iOS user-interface to be poorly designed; all 
that stuff belongs in common system routines that are shared across the 
board.  They'll get around to fixing that later, no drama.

Great, where does that leave the forward-delete funtion?  Absent by 
default.  People who do a lot of writing benefit greatly from having a 
moveable cursor and the ability to delete from the cursor in either 
direction.  Frankly I don't care that Apple prefers to stick with what 
they invented in early days when the teletype keyboard was the industry 
standard.  I can make the gizmo work.

That's good information, thank you.  It's not intuitive to me what any 
of the "special?" keys on the bottom row do, and I haven't yet sought 
out that piece of documentation.  Nor have I yet accustomed myself to 
the concept of "just trying" some of the icons that apps offer up and 
provide no clue about what they mean; too many years of being in a 
situation where "just trying" something could toast your system gives a 
fellow reason for caution, or maybe just bad habits.

I think Apple's doing okay, yes.  Not perfect, but pretty good.
