Nobody checks anything any more, why bother? It is impossible to check anything. Hidden in that 20 000 lines configure script ANY virus could be hidden safely since nobody will check that. Note that the machine infected by a rogue CONFIGURE script could be completely fucked up since they run very often with root privileges. Since configure scripts are plain text, inserting a back door or a trojan there is MUCH easier than patching an executable and requires less skills.
