Nope, the process predates Linux. I've used Solaris for over 20 years and due to the lack of packaged opensource software on older versions I was well used to to running "./configure; make" after downloading source. One reason configure scripts are so big is to take into account all of the possible (and often long dead) systems the code might get built on. > But even if it worked**, the question is WHY?
