No it was Msys, a lightweight Cygwin IIRC.

Yes, a C compiler, and a linker, obviously. And a possibly an OS when 
you want to execute the result.

I was talking about the prerequisites that seem to a feature of C 
applications developed under Unix. These apply even before you're 
allowed to get anywhere near a C compiler.

So I meant BASH scripts and the assorted utilities they invoke.

I'm not keen on make files either (because things tend to go wrong), but 
they unfortunately occur with Windows too.

I believe in having a C compiler (and linker), and simple human-readable 
/instructions/ on how to build a project. (Have the make-file too if you 
like but not instead of.)
