Aber darauf läuft es dann hinaus. Genau so war es auch. Banken, Versicherungen etc. waren diejenigen, die schon in Ende der 60er Jahre ihre Prozesse computerisierten. Damals waren Arbeitsspeicher nach Kilobytes bemessen (64 kB waren schon groß; m.a.W. ungefähr ein Millionstel heutiger PCs), deshalb musste man da sehr sparsam mit umgehen; Plattengeräte waren erstens irre teuer, zweitens klein (um 1975 typischerweise 50-100 MB, also um den Faktor 10000 kleiner als heutige PC-Platten) und unzuverlässig (fielen alle Naselang mit Oberfläöchenfehlern aus, waren als Langzeitspeicher ziemlich ungeeignet, sowas wie Raidsysteme gabs nicht); man hat damals Daten im Wesentlichen auf Magnetbändern gespeichert. Und die damals verbreiteten IBM/360- Systeme hatten u.a. eine hardwarebasierte Dezimalarithmetik, in der auch erstens alle kaufmämnnischen Rechnungen durchgeführt wurden (erst ins Binärsystem umwandeln und hinterher wieder zurück hätte bei den damals üblichen Taktraten, die allenfalls im unteren Megahertz-Bereich klagen, wenn überhaupt) viel zuviel Zeit gekostet; mit solchen Daten wurde ja nicht wirklich intensiv gerechnet) Also speicherte man Datümer als Dezimalzahl (damit musste ja nicht viel gerechnet werden, und wenn, mit den einzelnem Tagen und Monaten, nicht mit Sekunden seit <definierterNullpunkt>, und speicherte immer zwei Dezimalziffern in einem Byte. Damit ließ es sich dann trefflich rechnen (etwa Zinstage), und man sparte sich das Jahrhundert. Und diese Software aus den 60er/70er Jahren war erstens weitgehend in Maschinensprache geschrieben (wg. Arbeitspeicher einsparen), zweitens immer weiter im Einsatz (warum sollte man sie neu stricken?), drittens waren die alten Datenbestände da, viertens war das alles weitgehend undokumentiert (weder die fachlichen anforderungen, die damals zur Entwicklung geführt hatten, noch die Programme selber), fünftens die Programmierer schon lange im Ruhestand, und sechstens hatte kein IT- Verantwortlicher sich getraut, das alte Zeug anzufassen, denn das hätte ja in seiner Amtszeit nur irre Kosten verursacht - soll sich dochder Nachfolger damit rumschlagen.
