If you hide a pointer from the GC by some means, you risk that your 
memory will be collected and overwritten. Do not use any GC if you do 
things like that.

Isn't that an EASY rule?

I mean the GC remains OPTIONAL and if you do things like

O storing pointers on disk
O xoring or change the pointer value
O Encrypt the pointer with DES

and a LONG "etc" of things you can possibly do with pointers to alter 
their value

you just do not use the gc!!!

There are programs for instance that do not use memory allocation at all 
and get by with fixed size tables. In their environment, memory 
allocation can't be tolerated because of the possiblity of allocation 
failure is just impossible to afford. Real time systems, OS kernels, 
whatever.

Of course you can have BOTH worlds:

For some pointers ypu allocate manually, for others you allocate through 
the GC.
