I have a cousin who used to pronounce "th" as "f". I guess he was never 
made to say it properly when he was young. There are many examples of 
'lazy' speech.

I remember a German woman when I was on holiday (vacation) saying she 
never said "th" and thought it was always pronounced in English in the 
soft form - as in "thin", not appreciating that there was a hard version 
as in "this". I don't know if "th" is used in German.

That was especially interesting to read you comments about "autumn". 
And, having been there, I know what you mean about the Boston "r". To 
hear a Bostonian speak about a "car" is strange!
