I seriously suggest that you look at real numbers both as a mathematician 
thinks of them and then as they are represented in a computer. The 
problem is that there is no limit to the number of digits in a real 
number (how many thousand digits has Pi been calculated to now?) while 
most computers can only deal with the most significant 18 digits or less. 
This requires that the last digit in this representation *must* be 
rounded to give the closest approximation in however many digits the 
representation uses. As a result, as you perform calculations on these 
representations, is that the rounding errors accumulate. 

And it can get worse than that: a Java float can hold values in the range 
-10^127 to +10^127 but it only uses 24 bits for the significand, 
equivalent to 6 digits, so, although you can store a value of 6 billion 
dollars, written as $6,000,000,000.00 the last six digits will always be 
zero. Use a double and the range goes up -10^1023 to _10^1023 with 53 
bits for the significand, or 14 digits, so any value bigger than 
$999,999,999,999.99 will also have zeros for the last digits.

Since a long can hold fully decimal values of up to 18 digits, it can 
store considerably larger accurate monetary values than you can store in 
a double because the long can use all 63 bits for representing digits 
while a double can only use 53 bits because the exponent uses 11 bits of 
the 64 available.   

This is why its a really bad idea to use hold financial amounts in real 
number variables.

This used to be graphically illustrated by some of the accounting 
packages that were written in BASIC and run on early 8086-based 
microprocessors. As many of these BASICs were clones of Altair BASIC (the 
ancestor of MS BASIC) which had 16 bit integers and 32-bit floating 
point, the financial packages written in it naturally used floating point 
for monetary values because a 16 bit integer can only deal with 5 digits, 
or $999.99. However as this 32-bit floating point only used 24 bits to 
hold the signed significand, it, like a Java float, could only hold 6 
significant digits, and so became inaccurate when used for any value 
bigger than $9,999.99. This was noticed!

You store values as cents or pence. On input you ignore the decimal point 
between the 2nd and 3rd digit from the right (apart from complaining if 
it isn't there) and add it in when outputting the value to a screen or 
hard copy. Provided all external representations do this, then the user 
neither knows nor cares that the program stores values as cents/pence 
because their values he inputs and reads look like dollars/pounds to him.

Just use DecimalFormat to parse numbers being input or to format numbers 
output. Parsing can return any subtype of Number just as formatting can 
create an edited string from any subtype of Number.
