There have been several tragic episodes in the US for the opposite reason. 
The GPS showed a shortcut that would require 4WD or wasn't maintained in 
the winter. 

I have placed a couple of geocaches that played off my knowing the DeLorme 
maps many people used didn't reflect reality. One was a bridge that had 
been pedestrian only since the '80s and had washed out entirely in '96. 
Another inexplicably showed a road leading up a ridge. There was no 
evidence there had ever been a road. There was a trail that would 
challenge a mountain goat in places. The more rural the area the less 
frequently the map is updated.

Much of the work I did involved GIS both to locate the call for service 
location and to provide routing for the emergency responders. part of the 
task for a new site was reviewing the GIS data they submitted. Errors 
included different segments of a street with the same street numbers, 
completely different streets with the same name, street segments that 
failed to connect to an intersection and were not routable, and so forth. 

I did web map applications using the Esri API and the basemaps provided by 
Esri. Often when the vector data used by the site was overlaid on the 
basemap streets would not line up. Using OSM basemaps had the same 
problem, as did satellite imagery. 

Sometimes when traveling I'll play along with the GPS. Heading north on 93 
in Las Vegas feeds you onto interstates but you swing off to the west 
before going east. The algorithm saw that as inefficient and directed me 
onto surface streets. Not only were there stop lights and more traffic but 
it led through parts of North LV where most people prefer not to go.
