Why does he need Earthly advocates? Devil's advocates now oppose ideas in order to test them. Historically, an advocatus diaboli took a sceptical view of people's lives before they were declared saints. The Devil is unfairly demonised, in my opinion. Look at God's actions as reported in the Bible: sending the Flood to kill almost everyone (that was genocide, surely?); obliterating cities with fire and brimstone; sending plagues and killing firstborn sons…. I mean, Jesus! The Devil's actions are not in the same league. By comparison, He's a bit of a saint. Hmm. Are Donald Trump's lawyers a new sort of devil's advocate?
