Well, come over and explain that to my computer, then. The other day, I
was tidying up the cables at the back a little, and I had inadvertently
dislodged the mouse cable from its PS/2 port. It was still plugged in,
but not all the way. After booting up the machine, I noticed the mouse
wasn't working, so I reached out behind the computer chassis and pushed
the mouse plug back into place. After another reboot, the mouse wasn't
working at all anymore.

I removed the adapter plug from the mouse cable ─ it's actually a USB
mouse with a PS/2 adapter plug on it ─ and plugged it into a USB port.
Mouse worked again, no configuration needed ─ thanks to evdev.

The bottom line is this: you can get away with hot-(un)plugging a PS/2
port a couple of times, but if you do get away with it, then you're
simply extremely lucky. It's like playing Russian Roulette. PS/2
connectors were not designed for that, and you can (and will) blow them
up at some time if you keep doing this.

If you want hot-plugging, use the USB connectors. That's what they were
designed for.
