Spacetime is coordinates free, but on the surface of our home planet we have coordinates (based on our home planet). The usual notation of spacetime as 'four dimensional' space is imho nonsense, since in my oppinion time is an imaginary axis and you need 8 components to describe spacetime by means of so called 'bi-quaternions'.
