What sticks in my head is a movie (Saving Private Ryan?) showing taxis delivering telegrams from the Army to notify next of kin of a soldier's death. According to the movie, it was so common during wartime that neighbors seeing a taxi stop at a house would just assume the relevant husband/son had died and come over to console the widow/mother. I got the sense that typical suburban families (a) rarely received telegrams and (b) rarely used taxis. I don't think I've ever seen a telegram; when I was a kid, we were expected to send letters to relatives for most things or, if it was urgent, a very short phone call. I taught my parents about email in my early teens, and it saved them so much on talking with my sisters (both at college) that they happily paid my ISP bill from then on.
