I've had some flavor of UUCP connection from 1989 through... about 2003, I suppose is when I finally stopped running my own news-server and using an internet based solution. At one previous place of employ, I provided NNTP feeds to about 450 sites that were downstream of us, and exchanged feeds with 30 or 40 other "major players" ... At the next place I worked, I was responsible for managing systems serving literally thousands of feeds, and tens of thousands of NNRP users. Nowhere is there any document that even suggests, much less enforces anything related to article age.[1] While it is true that most hosts had expiry limits expressed in days or weeks, there was no specification that compelled sites to do so -- it was simply a matter of "how much do we want to spend on disk space for this?" The only factor that would limit the age of a post to which one could reply would be "Was that post in my spool such that I could see it and reply to it". There is no concept at the protocol level in any of UUCP transport, the HDB extensions thereto, or NNTP of a "reply" ... there are merely "articles". If I had ever thought to store on disk a posting from ten years earlier, I could insert it into any point in the network, so long as I created a well-formed References: header, and I can think of no implementation of news transport, *ever* that would balk at it. Not today, not in 1995, not ever. The only way an entry point into Usenet could know that my posting here was a response to yours, is that it contains a "References: " header. Enforcing some manner of 'no replying to old postings' would require that the entry point maintain an indexed list of all 'valid' Message-ID values. Giving that I could be replying to an article that I got through some other path, it is entirely possible that I'm replying through a connection at foovax to an article that I read from barvax, even though foovax does not (yet) have the article because it's sitting in a spool directory waiting to be delivered. --- [1] There is a recommendation in RFC 1036 that message-ID not be reused within a two-year horizon, so one could take that two years as a maximum lifetime as imagined (but not stated explicitly) by The Cabal. There Is No Cabal.
