There are lots of different reasons, and a trust would be constructed differently depending on what the goal was. The main exception is class action suits: the loser pays the trust, and then the trust pays the class members--and the lawyer. OTOH, a trust is a good way to avoid someone suing _you_; if they win, you'd just declare bankruptcy (since _you_ have no attachable assets) and they'd get nothing. Your trust (and anything it owns) would be unaffected because it wasn't a party to the suit or the bankruptcy. The trustee _should be_ the person doing the actual work; if not, you picked the wrong one. Note that in the case of living trusts (very common), the trustee and the beneficiary often start out as the same person. When that person dies, the trust dictates who succeeds him in both roles--and those are often different people, e.g. when the beneficiary is a minor.
