John, there is this thing called the second law of thermodynamics, which
says that the entropy of a closed system (and the universe counts) will
increase.

As entropy increases, the energy available to do work decreases.

This law about entropy was discovered back in the 1800s when a lot of
physicists were working on thermodynamics. And then Ludwig Boltzmann
showed that this is a natural consequence of classical mechanics.

Now you, as an expression of your faith in an eternal and cycling
universe, are saying that the second law of thermodynamics (and in fact
the ordinary mechanics that gives rise to it) can't possibly be right,
because it is in conflict with something you've taken in faith.
