You may want to consider changing your story back to nukes buried 32-96 miles deep. Even when they did detonate nukes in solid rock deep enough to leave a cavity and not blast through the surface (depths of 1000 feet or more) what happens is initially you have an expanded cavity full of vaporized rock, which then cools and condenses to liquid, then solid rock leaving a vacuum. The pressure of the atmosphere and weakened overlaying rock then forms a subsistence crater later as the cavity collapses. The Nevada Test Site is pockmarked with them.
