I work in a district in the rural township where I grew up, and I know at least half the voters that come in personally. Writing the name down on a separate list is now banned in my county as violating voter privacy. It's a holdover from the old machines where it was useful in keeping track of the proper number in the book, but is no longer needed with the new machines and paper ballots. In my county, you sign in a box in the book next to a similar box containing the "official" signature. When I do that job, I watch as the signature (for those I don't know) is being written to see if it compares with the other one. I don't have to actually read it to do that, I just have to see the handwriting. Most voters are watching what they are writing, not watching me watching them. The ballot number is written on a line next to the signature boxes, and the inspector puts his or her initials on another line. The ballot itself has no number, but there is one on the stub left behind. If the paper ballot is spoiled, the voter gets a replacement, and its number is also noted in the book. The voter gets three chances, that's it. Your county may be different. I wouldn't know. TJ
