Comparing your signature to the one in the book is the way we check your ID. This would be the same way absentee and military ballots are checked for ID. Are you saying that the same standard shouldn't be applied to ALL voters? How do you check a voter photo ID for a military ballot? Or are you saying that there shouldn't be absentee or military voting? In NY, inspectors are selected from registered members of the top two vote-getting parties in the last gubernatorial election. In effect, this means that they are Democrat and Republican. Independents or members of other parties need not apply. Any action, from checking in voters to opening and closing the polls, to verifying the counts afterward MUST be performed by members of BOTH parties, so they can watch each other for possible tampering. Even the door to the room storing the voting machines has TWO locks, with a key in the possession of the commissioners from EACH party. The old lever machines we used to use, before HAVA, were subject to breakdown and had no verification of accuracy. The machines we use now in my county have redundant memories of the vote count. One is on a memory card that is taken to the county Board of Elections at the end of the day. Another memory card is sealed in the machine. And, the paper ballots can be scanned again for verification. A tamperer would have to tamper with all three in the space of a half hour, an extremely difficult task. Machines are subject to random testing for accuracy, and so far none have failed, to my knowledge. We have had local elections that would have turned on one vote, but by far the majority of them would not be affected by the tiny number of fraudulent voters that might slip through. It would take a huge, very organized movement to sway an election one way or another by fraud. Do you really think such a thing would go undetected? We inspectors aren't perfect, even the Republican ones like me, but most of us do our very best to do our jobs. I for one resent the implication that we are so criminally incompetent as to attempt to throw an election one way or another. TJ
