Yes, the US economy is no longer driven on the back of manufacturing of hard goods. We are a dominantly service-based economy and have been for some years. http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/01/the-shift-from-manufacturing-to-service-economy/ So which businesses are more "valuable" is best assessed by what's paying the bills in the US. Today. Not nostalgia from post-WWII days. > > In your dreams, perhaps, but then you are just another deluded client of > the dream merchants. > > >> >> Apple is especially good at building the ecosystem that "just works" >> with bulletproof ease and lowest-possible frustrations in use. That's what it was in the 1970s, when it was a tool used for research and hobbyists. Then, the computer had no intrinsic value for the end user unless the user added quite a bit of effort and expertise to give it value. The vision of the personal computer, which probably started more with the Xerox Alto than with the Apple II or the IBM PC, was to *change* the character of the computer to exactly what you describe below: an appliance. An appliance with the simplicity of use of a light switch or a blender or a car radio. That's because MOST people do not want general purpose machines, for the same reason they do not want kits to make cars or a pile of wood and bricks to make homes. They want things that offer value on their own without requiring a lot of effort of their own, and without having to acquire expertise. This was recognized right away by Jobs et al. when they visited Xerox PARC, and they saw how to make a personal computer that would actually appeal to a large market. > > Apple, inferring from your description above, does not make computers. > Rather it produces "appliances" that are highly fixed and directed in > their capabilities. I disagree. This is precisely the appeal of the smart phone with an app storefront. On Apple's app store, there are now 1,500,000 apps roughly. The premise of the smartphone+app-marketplace is that most people do not need or do not want an omnibus device or omnibus software that does everything. Most people want a device that does a FEW things, but everyone has a DIFFERENT few things. So everyone's phone becomes customized to their own lifestyle and interests. So the device and software is HIGHLY flexible, but with the objective of delivering to each end user a small amount of functions that are really all they want. Anything more than that becomes not worth the effort of ownership. > > What we see, then, in these latest gadgets, is an extreme limitation > of the power and potential afforded to the user. Apple, and its corporate cohorts, should be > jeered and not lauded. > Most people really don't share your vision of the wonder years of the Homebrew Computer Club, which by the way had dissolved by 1987. I'm pretty sure Heathkit is pretty much defunct. However, there is a lively though small community of homesteaders that make their own log cabins. As a matter of disclosure, I myself am part of a dying breed of craftsmen. The difference between you and me is that I accept my deep minority status, acknowledge the reasons why my line of work is not really mainstream anymore, and refrain from despairing about the state of the world. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
