Yes, because they offer something that people consider to be more 
valuable than what GM, US Steel, and Exxon offer. And so they are wildly 
successful.

These people are building ecosystems where, once you are logged into one 
of their services, you enjoy the benefits of the other tied-in services. 
And on top of that, there is a network effect of being in a community of 
people that are in the same ecosystem, which adds exponentially 
increasing value to belonging.

Apple is especially good at building the ecosystem that "just works" 
with bulletproof ease and lowest-possible frustrations in use. This is, 
today, the most valuable offering that any company can offer. And so 
Apple is the largest company in the world.
