than steel, oil, and automobiles.

What you are describing is a cheap transmogrification of computing.

When personal computers first came into being, which was somewhere
in the late 1970's in the form of the IBM PC and others, one could
do nothing with them without actual programming.  These machines
booted up directly into the BASIC interpreter and the user had to
compose simple programs or programming commands in order to accomplish
even the simplest of tasks.

A computer is a GENERAL PURPOSE machine.  In itself, it is nothing.
The user is responsible for creating the transformation into a productive
entity based on the user's desire.

Apple, inferring from your description above, does not make computers.
Rather it produces "appliances" that are highly fixed and directed in
their capabilities.

What we see, then, in these latest gadgets, is an extreme limitation
of the power and potential afforded to the user.  This is a lamentable
degradation of technology.  Apple, and its corporate cohorts, should be
jeered and not lauded.
