This can be completely avoided if you use (in Intel processors) two 
different register sets to hold long doubles (in the FPU) and doubles 
(in the SSE registers).

I did this two years ago. Gcc also does it, as far as I know. The only 
big compiler system that doesn't have long double implemented is 
Microsoft Visual Studio.
